Healthcare data integration platform
A US-based digital health company needed patient clinical records from several external health data networks and aggregators, each with its own formats, authentication and response times. We built a serverless platform that brings them together behind one API.
- Node.js
- AWS Lambda
- Amazon API Gateway
- Serverless architecture
The challenge
Many sources, one growing patient base
Each clinical data provider had its own formats, authentication and response times. As the client brought on more patients, the volume of records grew quickly, and one slow source could not be allowed to hold up the rest.
What we built
The solution
- A serverless API platform on Node.js and AWS Lambda, with Amazon API Gateway routing requests.
- An ingestion engine that fetches patient data from multiple third-party clinical data providers in parallel.
- Separate, independently scaling functions per provider, with retries and fault tolerance, so one slow source never blocks the others.
- Data handled securely throughout, in line with healthcare privacy requirements.
The outcome
Impact
- One unified API
- Patient records from multiple providers, available through a single interface.
- Scales with demand
- Pay-per-use infrastructure that scales automatically, with no servers to manage.
- Node.js
- AWS Lambda
- Amazon API Gateway
- Serverless architecture
- REST APIs
- Healthcare data standards
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why serverless for data integration?
Each provider gets its own function that scales on its own, so a slow or failing source is retried in isolation rather than holding up the others, and you pay only for the work actually done.
Can you integrate with our health data providers?
Yes. Each new source is added as its own independently scaling function, with its own authentication, format handling and retry rules.
